MyDiscount.com
Who’s Behind It
The thinking behind the name, PremiumBrands and building online businesses.
I founded PremiumBrands to bring an end user’s perspective to names. The question I ask is straightforward: would I build on this? Names I have not yet built on are the ones open to sale. With MyDiscount.com, the appeal is a personal introduction to a familiar benefit, with enough room for a founder to choose a useful savings product rather than another undifferentiated page of codes.
The business comes first
My view of a name comes from building online businesses. In 2007, I acquired the press release distribution business running on i-Newswire.com. We secured iNewswire.com in 2013 and upgraded to Newswire.com in February 2015, after more than a year of negotiating and consulting SEO professionals. The progression mattered because the name had to fit the business we were working to build, rather than become an explanation the team repeated every day.
The morning of the switch to Newswire.com, a prospect told one of our sales agents, “Oh yeah, Newswire.com. I’ve heard of you guys.” That was impossible. I remember it as an unusually clear example of how a familiar category word can change an introduction.
Issuer Direct acquired the business in 2022 for about $44 million. That was an acquisition of the business and the team’s work, not a valuation of the domain. Issuer Direct’s acquisition announcement provides the business context.
Why the identity deserves an early decision
AI makes it easier for a founder to put together the first version of an online product. It can help organize research, prepare a working interface or turn a rough process into something testable. More people can get to that starting line. The harder question becomes which experience is useful enough to keep improving, and which identity the founder wants attached to that effort.
For a consumer savings product, an attractive interface is only part of the job. Someone has to choose the participating merchants, make offer restrictions visible and take an expired promotion out of circulation. A personal name raises a useful product question: what would make these offers relevant to this person? That question can guide a member’s first category selection, the offers they save and the email that brings them back.
I prefer to make the naming decision before all the surrounding materials become expensive to change. A membership card, merchant window sign, newsletter sender and support address can accumulate quickly. Starting with a temporary identity means accepting a second round of that work if the name changes later, assuming the preferred name remains available.
Buying with a builder’s eye
I bought PremiumBrands.com before I had a plan for it. I value premium names and knew that waiting could mean losing the chance to build on it. By now it could have been with an end user who was already building, and no longer for sale. That decision reflects how I approach the collection: look for a name I would want to use, then consider the business it could support.
OnlineBusiness.com is part of my wider work around building online businesses. PremiumBrands leads the acquisition conversation here. The price for MyDiscount.com is for the name alone, without an operating business, products, customers or website assets. Every purchase includes an optional personalized roadmap for launching or rebranding, if the buyer wants that help.
A founder considering MyDiscount.com should start with the intended experience. Can you explain the first audience, the reason an offer belongs and the way a person would use it? If those answers are becoming clear, the name can give them a consistent home. Request pricing to discuss MyDiscount.com, including possible payment plans or other structures depending on the name. If another name is the one you want to build on, PremiumBrands can help pursue that acquisition too.
MyDiscount.com is a head start, with a personal name to carry across the member card, merchant window and weekly email. The offers and service still have to earn the next visit. A premium .com is a trust shortcut.
